[There's part of him that inwardly groans when he discovers that there's a message waiting for them on this damn thing. He suspects it's Aki at first—because of course it would be—and never has he been so surprised to be wrong.
He debates leaving the message untouched, given that whoever this kid was sending it to, he wasn't the intended recipient, but, eventually, he withholds a sigh and answers.]
[There's a pause as the message comes to his inbox. He might choke it up to the wires getting crossed again—wouldn't be the first. But this one is different. The face on the other end knows his name—though hell if he's actually ever gotten called Shinji-kun before, not in ten goddamn years—but he apparently knows who he is. Theoretically. And there's something familiar about him. Maybe they had crossed paths briefly in the castle, that's probably it, though Shinjiro's never one to foster interaction with passersby and the other teen had probably gone ignored. But Aki could have run into him. And he knows how Aki is. Sticks his nose into things. Might be introverted, but he's friendly.
So he suppresses a sigh, grits his teeth, and returns the message. Doesn't see a reason not to be blunt and to the point.]
[Akihiko directly dials into Shinji's line, hoping that the damn bracelet won't glitch this up. Waits silently as he hears his friend's voice stating his name, and then that short prompt.]
......
[He exhales shakily, and disconnects the feed before the bracelet can start recording his message.]
[And the next day, he calls up Shinji again. Only, this time, he actually lingers on the line for a few seconds after the bracelet has started recording.]
......
[He still doesn't know what to say. Uttering a quiet sigh, Akihiko ends the connection, leaving behind nothing but cryptic silence.]
That's the question Akihiko wants to ask, but he's pretty sure he knows the answer. Back when Shinji was trying his damned hardest to wedge distance between them, Akihiko could only get a hold of him once a week. Or even less, on some weeks. He's almost positive that Shinji would still want more time.
More time...
Akihiko clenches a fist tightly, feeling the tightness that forms an uncomfortable cage inside his chest. Submitting to impulse, he activates the bracelet and directs it to Shinji's inbox once more. Listens to those same words, as he did the last two days. Hears the short pause that follows the end of his friend's message, and then the recording begins.]
......
[Is he... being unfair to Shinji about this? Pushing him too much? Is it expected for them to sweep the issue under the rug without discussion? Should he wait for Shinji to approach him instead?
...Who knows how long that would take, though...
Akihiko speaks softly, his voice sounding unusually hesitant and uncertain.]
Shinji... I, uh...
[Goddamn it. Why is this suddenly so hard? It's not like he hasn't persisted after Shinji before. This feels even more difficult than the painfully lonely two years between the accidental death of Ken Amada's mother, up to when Shinji finally rejoined SEES.
Maybe it's because he knows that here, Shinji is free of obligations from him. He had returned to SEES because of Ken, not for him, or even for the promise that they made together, when they were children.
Somewhere along the years, Shinji has stopped needing him. No longer has a reason to stay connected to him. But Akihiko still hasn't let go of their connection, and...
His throat dries up, leaving him speechless. All he can manage is a single, lowly murmured word that barely gets picked up by the feed.]
Shit...
[And then his voice abruptly cuts off as he presses the stone of the bracelet.]
[He had originally gotten the idea from the boy’s post on the network about sending letters to lost ones. Technically, Shinji wasn’t lost to him right now, but once he got back home… Well, he might not remember everything that had happened in Asgard. He would resume visiting Shinji’s grave, and talking to him, praying for his well-being, just like he did for Miki. Still, he was determined to make good on his word, and try to give Shinji a somewhat normal life.
Talking about mundane, everyday kinda shit – that was normal, right? Hell if Akihiko knew. It wasn’t like he had a normal life himself. But he would make sure not to mention anything about the Dark Hour, or Tartarus. Or really, any of the events leading up to Graduation Day. Work, training, food, interesting things that he observed – those were relatively safe topics to discuss.
And so it began.]
…I moved out of the Thor house last week. I’m staying in the Baldr District now – my apartment number is 104. Feel free to stop by if you ever need anything, or if you just want to get out of the Hel house for a little while. Some of your housemates seem pretty “interesting,” from what I’ve seen on the network. I have a second room in my apartment, and I’m not sure what I should use it for. Maybe I can fill it up with additional training equipment…
[Once he got that first note out of the way, it became easier to continue putting his thoughts down onto paper, during random intervals throughout the day. Though Akihiko often gave people the impression that he was all brawns and emotional outbursts, he did have a brain underneath that protein-loving exterior. He had always performed well at school, scoring high marks due to diligent studies. Once he put his mind to something, a goal to strive for, he threw a great deal of effort into going toward it.
And so, Akihiko started keeping a small notepad and pen in his back pocket whenever he went out, which was pretty often, between training and work. Despite the fact that the club wasn’t really his type of setting, he enjoyed going to his job every weekend. Protecting people was something that he always wanted to do, and keeping peace at Stride was an important task, one that he took seriously. Once he was back in his apartment after a shift one night, his mind reflected on a very recent event that had stuck to his memory.]
…This doesn’t happen very often, but I had to throw someone out of Stride tonight. He blamed his behavior on the drinks, though I think he was just using that as an excuse to be a jerk. Unfortunately, there isn’t anything resembling a police force here in the city, or even a judicial system. If enough people are interested in establishing one and working together to fight for justice, we should definitely do it. Police officers can keep the peace, and might even be able to help organize groups for whenever we have to confront the giants again. I want to make a difference for someone…
[The physical distance was actually somewhat beneficial, in this instance. Akihiko had a lot on his mind from recent revelations, and in solitude, he could compose letters more carefully rather than blurt out whatever he was thinking at the moment. He continued to write them with the original intent of leaving out mentions of their time back home. Anything else more important could be addressed in person, after Shinji had some time and space to himself, per his preference.]
…Hey, I broke a record today! I wanted to test out how much weight I could carry on individual fingers, and I managed to add a second rock on top of the first one. Did you know that even though the pinky is the weakest finger, it’s still more useful than the ring finger? That’s because it’s more flexible, and also a lot faster in movement. I won’t be able to lift too much, but I’ll still find some use for it out on the battlefield.
Anyway, you know that I’ve decided to go to Vanaheim tomorrow. I hope to see you there! It’ll be interesting to check out more of this world instead of just staying in Asgard. If the food really is better in Vanaheim, that will make the trip even more worthwhile. Actually, I think I should start cooking some meals here instead of going out all the time. But it’s always late when I get back from work, and I want to eat something right away. Do you have any simple recipes in mind? Or maybe you can recommend a cookbook for beginners? If you have time, let’s visit the bookstore together and take a look.
That reminds me, I need to meet up with you soon. If you’re staying in Asgard, then let’s rendezvous as soon as I get back. It’s important, so don’t forget…
[In honor of the Earth holiday centering on love, Freya sends out a little gift around this time.
A small box containing a piece of chocolate will appear on your pillow during the day. When consumed, the chocolate’s magic will lift your mood for a short period of time. It’s accompanied by a note.]
Where love might bring about sorrow, it also welcomes joy.
[ In honour of the god centering on love being a giant frilly prissypants, Loki sends his own little gift just a few hours after hers.
His box of chocolate will look, smell, and taste exactly like Freya's did, appearing right next to where Freya's was or is if you haven't picked it up yet. The only difference between the two is that Loki's won't lift your mood; it'll give you loud and embarrassing flatulence for the next three hours.
It's also accompanied by a note. ]
Where joy might bring about yearning, it also welcomes wonder.
Shinjiro-san, would it be possible for the both of us to talk in private? I'd like to discuss something with you, but I don't want to tell too much over the network.
...and don't tell Akihiko-san or let him follow you.
[Oh boy. It's the leader of the friendship brigade. His message makes him curious though, wonder why not teling Aki is so important (not like he tells Aki when he's gonna to leave and where he's going all the time anyway, like Aki's his mother or some shit). But he'll keep it to the point.]
[With a name that's as reeking of positivity as that one is, he definitely would have remembered it, had he heard about the place being built or opening Opening in a few days, huh?.]
[ooc: This is a small mini-plot me, Yosuke and Souji-muns are doing for Ryoji's absence. They notice Ryoji's missing, so they get together and start searching for his bracelet.]
[Before he wakes up, Shinjiro will remember this dream vividly. If he wants to keep it to himself or share it with the others is entirely up to him, but he'll have to describe it in his own words;]
Something is laughing at him from a far off corner. As he walks towards it, it changes into the sound of AM radio, then a television set flickering on and off. The closer Shinjiro gets, the more vivid images of various large-scale human wars over the three millennia of human history appear on screen in brief flashes, in black and white.
A soldier peers into the screen and seems to notice him, extending his hand and grabbing on to his collar, and Shinjiro is dragged into the small screen, as he somehow easily fits against his will.
He falls from the sky, as bright light and smells awaken his senses. It's night, and there's a huge moon looming, visible in the sky. Only then does he realize...
...it's the Moonlight Bridge. Cars pass around, ignoring him as if he's not there. Tatsumi Port Island is visible on the distance, as is Iwatodai, but the buildings don't seem to be quite right.
A single golden butterfly passes by, and sits on his elbow.
As he watches, the sky turns bright red, as a giant earthquake shakes the very foundations of everything around him. Cars shatter as windows explode, buildings fall to the ground in the far distance. The very bridge itself begins to collapse under its weight, as the cables snap, sending him tumbling towards the water--
--but something grabs him again, dragging him away right back into the darkness. The butterfly is nowhere to be seen. A soft voice speaks, but it's hard to hear who it is. "Ahhh...sorry. You aren't meant to be here. Please be careful..."
He awakes with a terrible feeling of dread and fear that will pass after a few seconds.
Day 308 :: Voice :: Asgard
Are y'there?
Man, this thing has been like stupid right? I think I accidentally touched that ice too much, my fingers still feel frozen.
We should go out for ramen, yeah? I'm gonna get Gaara to come too.
I'm coming over there now. I can see your house.
Er, yeah I'm here. You comin' down?
